Compared to the last special two weeks ago, steer and heifer calves under 600 lbs were lightly tested on limited comparisons but sold with a firm to higher undertone, feeder cattle over 600 lbs sold with a sharply higher undertone with few good comparisons as weights from two weeks ago didn't match up well with this week's offering. Demand was good on a moderate offering. Several stick out sales included 59 hd of 729 lb steers at 380.50, 57 hd of 723 lb heifers at 355.00 and 60 hd of 779 lb heifers at 342.50. Slaughter steers and heifers sold steady with slaughter cows trading fully steady to firm. Cattle on Feed Report was released Friday afternoon with On Feed at 98 percent, Placements came in at 94 percent with average guess at 91 percent and Marketings at 94 percent as expected. Supply included: 86% Feeder Cattle (43% Steers, 53% Heifers, 4% Bulls); 14% Slaughter Cattle (23% Steers, 13% Heifers, 58% Cows, 7% Bulls). Feeder cattle supply over 600 lbs was 78%.

Due to the heat again, not enough feeders in the offering to establish a trend, undertones of 1.00-5.00 higher. Slaughter cows sold steady and bulls scarce; Demand not establish and supply light. Compared to last week: Feeder steers 2.00-6.00 higher. Feeder heifers 5.00-8.00 higher. Steer and heifer calves sharply higher, with gains of up to 25.00. Demand continues very good for all classes. Timely rains have kept grass pastures greener longer, thus cattle have been able to graze through much of the summer. Several nice sets of cattle off grass on Monday. Slaughter cattle trade in the south was slow last week as cattle futures traded on both sides. Beef prices soared with the Choice carcass closing over 4.00. Quality average to attractive. Supply included: 100% Feeder Cattle (64% Steers, 31% Heifers, 5% Bulls). Feeder cattle supply over 600 lbs was 67%.
