Compared to the last special two weeks ago, steer calves under 600 lbs on a light test sold with a slightly lower undertone, 600-850 lbs sold steady to firm, with a couple of instances were 500-550 lb heifers and 650-700 lb steers sold 5.00-10.00 higher, steers over 850 lbs sold with a lower undertone. Heifer calves weighing 450-750 lbs sold steady to firm with a near pot load weighing 841 lbs selling 8.00 lower than a similar load from two weeks ago. Demand was good on a moderate offering with overall a good quality offering of steers weighing 600-850 lbs and heifers weighing 500-850 lbs all sold on and active market. With near half the country bracing for snow and frigid temperatures likely to impair cattle performance and marketing. Cattle on Feed Report was released Friday afternoon looking to be neutral to friendly with On Feed coming in at expectations at 97 percent, Placements at 95 percent with average estimate at 93 percent and Marketings at expectations at 102 percent. Slaughter steers and heifers sold steady with slaughter cows on lighter offerings traded 5.00-10.00 higher on an active market. Supply included: 90% Feeder Cattle (57% Steers, 39% Heifers, 4% Bulls); 10% Slaughter Cattle (22% Steers, 20% Heifers, 49% Cows, 9% Bulls). Feeder cattle supply over 600 lbs was 70%.

Compared to last week: Feeder cattle and calves mostly steady to 4.00 lower on lesser quality and increased flesh. Demand moderate to good. Commodity futures closed on Monday for the MLK Day holiday, following a sharply lower day for the cattle complex on Friday. Quality mostly average. Cattle in slightly thin to fleshy conditions. Winter type weather has finally arrived with highs only reaching the mid 30's on Monday. This will be warm by this weekend, when temps are expected to be in the single digits and teens. Supply included: 100% Feeder Cattle (59% Steers, 40% Heifers, 1% Bulls). Feeder cattle supply over 600 lbs was 58%.
