Sheep And Goat Field Day To Highlight Management-Intensive Grazing

University of Missouri Extension will host the fourth annual Sheep and Goat Day, Aug. 7 at the MU Southwest Missouri Research, Extension and Education Center in Mount Vernon, says Patrick Davis, University of Missouri Extension livestock field specialist.
Held in collaboration with Lincoln University and with financial support from North Central Sustainable Agriculture Research an Education, the field day will focus on management-intensive grazing. Registration begins at 8 a.m., and the event concludes at 4:30 p.m.
“Forage and grazing management are essential to any sheep and goat operation,” says Davis. “Topics will serve both beginners and experienced sheep and goat producers and will emphasize effective grazing management for their operations.”
MU Extension speakers include Davis; Tim Schnakenberg, MU Extension agronomy field specialist; and Jennifer Lutes, MU Extension ag business field specialist. Lincoln University speakers include Homero Salinas-Gonzalez and Mohan Acharya of the small ruminant program. Mark Kennedy of Kennedy Grassland Services, LLC, will also provide instruction. Throughout the day, these grazing management experts will give presentations and lead hands-on activities.

- Forage/animal selection
- Nutritional management
- Parasite control
- Economics/marketing
- Grazing system layout, design, water and fencing
- Forage quality and quantity evaluation
- Health and body condition score evaluation
“Businesses supporting the field day will have exhibitor booths,” says Davis. Attendees can explore the booths to learn how exhibitors’ products and services can benefit their sheep and goat operations. Lunch and snacks are included with registration. The conference fee is $30 per person. Register by July 30.
