Memphis In January – Delta States Irrigation Conference

   The second annual Delta States Irrigation Conference, sponsored by the United Soybean Board, will be held in conjunction with the National Conservation Systems Cotton & Rice Conference January 12th through 14th in Memphis, TN.
   Irrigation engineers and research scientists from Louisiana State University, Mississippi State University, Texas A&M University, University of Arkansas, University of Missouri and the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service will be paired with producers and crop consultants from across the Mid-South to describe how irrigation water management strategies are improving on-farm profitability and sustainability of the Mississippi River Valley Alluvial aquifer.
   Breakout sessions will cover six major topics concerning irrigation water management strategies for the Mid-South: 1) optimizing pump performance, 2) improving furrow irrigation application efficiency thr-ough delivery techniques such as computerized-hole-selection and surge irrigation, 3) proper irrigation scheduling through soil moisture monitoring, 4) in-field management practices that improve irrigation application efficiency such as no-tillage, cover crops and polyacrylamides (PAM), 5) rice irrigation water management strategies including pivot and alternate wetting and drying (AWD) techniques, and 6) crop specific recommendations for optimizing irrigation application efficiency and scheduling in cotton, corn, soybean and rice. Additionally, a pivot and Pipe Planner clinic will be held in conjunction with the conference to help producer optimize irrigation application efficiency in sprinkler and furrow irrigated environments, respectively.
