Cleaner Fields Lead To Strong Yield For Growers Using Enlist™ Technology

The Enlist ™ weed control system keeps weeds at bay, allowing crops to perform better.

INDIANAPOLIS, IND.
Many Midsouth growers this year harvested cleaner fields after adopting the Enlist™ weed control system. They’ve seen that the Enlist system provides additional avenues for controlling tough weeds.
Jason Cook, an Arkansas grower, also found the Enlist system helped with his most difficult weed challenge. “In this area, we have a major pigweed problem,” Cook reports. “I’m ecstatic with weed control, plant population and emergence. The fields of Enlist soybeans were clean and probably the cleanest fields I had.”
For soybean and corn growers, the Enlist system allows the use of Enlist Duo® herbicide, a combination of glyphosate and new 2,4-D choline. Enlist™ soybeans also feature tolerance to glufosinate, and Enlist corn offers tolerance to FOP herbicides, giving both corn and soybean growers access to multiple modes of action.
Cotton growers this year were able to plant PhytoGen® brand PHY 490 W3FE cottonseed, which includes the Enlist trait and WideStrike® 3 Insect Protection. While Enlist Duo is not yet registered for use on Enlist cotton, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed to register Enlist Duo for use with Enlist™ cotton and registration is expected early in 2017.
Meanwhile, growers this summer benefited from the glufosinate tolerance, and were able to incorporate another mode of action postemergence to control tough and herbicide-resistant weeds.
“The PhytoGen cotton with the Enlist trait yielded even better than expected,” says Bradley Moore, a Tennessee grower. “It outyielded the other varieties around it by about 100 pounds.”
   New technology proves its worth
Midsouth growers need a herbicide program that handles the tough weeds they face. Multiple modes of action help them meet the challenges these hard-to-control weeds pose.
“With the rise and expansion of herbicide-resistant weeds, growers need solutions that will work on their acres,” says Scott Wright, an Enlist™ field specialist who covers the Midsouth. “The Enlist weed control system allows growers to use effective herbicides postemergence to control even their toughest weeds.”
Wright notes growers using Enlist Duo herbicide on soybeans are able to achieve superior weed control with the combination of glyphosate and new 2,4-D choline as well as glufosinate if they choose. In addition, growers see excellent tolerance to glufosinate with both Enlist soybeans and Enlist cotton.
“With two modes of action, Enlist Duo broadens postemergence weed control,” Wright says. “While Enlist Duo is not yet registered for use on Enlist cotton, growers have found glufosinate tolerance is an immediate benefit.”
“I think Enlist is going to be a big deal overall for cotton,” Moore says. “It’s going to help around here control pigweeds.”
No drift to worry growers, neighbors
These days, it’s not enough to control weeds: A herbicide has to control weeds without affecting crops, including neighbors’ crops.
“I was concerned about the drift,” Cook admits. “But we had a field with cotton that did not contain the Enlist trait right beside our field (within 10 feet), and I was amazed that it did not drift. It did not drift across roads. It did not get on the cotton. When we sprayed it, that’s where it stayed.”
The Enlist™ weed control system also helps growers reduce labor and passes through the field.
“Enlist Duo really helped me on minimum tillage,” Cook says. He notes the herbicide enables him to control weeds without resorting to heavy tillage. “It saves us money.”
