Rice Researcher Of The Year




















   Dr. Jarrod Hardke, Associate Professor of Rice Agronomy, University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service, Stuttgart Arkansas, has been named the 2019 Rice Researcher of the Year at the 22nd Annual National Cotton & Rice Conference, Southern Corn & Soybean Conference Southern Precision Ag Conference and the Delta States Irrigation Conference.
   Hardke earned a Bachelor of Science with a double major in Crop Management/Pest Management and double minor in Agricultural Business and Environments and Soil and Water Science from the University of Arkansas. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy, Department of Entomology from Louisiana State University.
   Hardke’s current responsibilities are to lead development of production recommendations for rice in Arkansas. Focusing on variety/hybrid yield performance, cultural management practices, fertility management and integrated pest management. Hardke is also responsible for providing primary leadership for the DD50 Rice Management Program and the Rice Research Verification Program.
   Hardke is known as the go to man for rice production, not only in Arkansas but in the Mid-south region as well, according to his colleagues. “He goes out of his way to make sure that rice producers have the most up to date information and recommendations on variety/hybrid selection, management practices, and fertility and pet management decisions.”
   Hardke has contributed over 300 newspaper quotes, 108 newsletters and 34 extension publications. Recently Hardke developed an improved and up to date Rice Production Guide as well as a pocket sized version, both of which have received numerous awards.
   His accomplishments also include 18 refereed journal articles and numerous published research series summaries as well as a long list of abstracts and meeting proceedings.
   “The real evidence of true value is represented in the number of phone calls and field visits that one takes on a day to day basis. I am not aware of anyone that walks more fields with growers and consultants than Hardke. Growers rely heavily on his ability to make accurate decisions based on his research data and experience.”
   Hardke is a member of the Entomological Society of America; American Society of Agronomy/Soil Science Society of America/Crop Science Society of America; the Louisiana Agricultural Sciences Association; Mississippi Entomological Association; Arkansas Crop Production Association; Arkansas County Agricultural Agents Association and Arkansas Association of Cooperative Extension Specialists.
   Hardke  was recognized with numerous awards including: Outstanding Educational Material by American Society of Agronomy for the Arkansas Row Crops Blog, 2015; National Association County Agricultural Agents (NACAA) National Finalist, Outstanding Bound Book, Rice Production Handbook, 2015; NACAA Regional Finalist, Outstanding Bound Book, Rice Production Handbook, 2015; Arkansas County Agricultural Agents Association (ACAAA) Outstanding Bound Book, Rice Production Handbook, 2015; ACAAA Outstanding Newsletter Team, Arkansas Rice Update, 2015; and the Extension Excellence Award for Early Career-Faculty, 2014. ∆
