UI Extension To Offer Southern Illinois Beef Day Conference On August 14

   The Southern Illinois Beef Conference will be held on Wednesday, August 14, 2019 in the Applied Science Center at Rend Lake College, Ina, Illinois from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The conference is designed to be useful for cow/calf and stocker/backgrounding producers of all knowledge levels.  Topics covered at the conference include information on melding EPDs and cattle conformation to select replacement heifers, marketing cattle, black vultures – do’s and don’ts, the latest news and basic knowledge regarding ticks and diseases transmission, and invasive plants.
   The morning session will begin at the 4H barns with a set of heifers provided by Gordon Cattle Company, LLC. The keynote speaker, Dr. Doug Parrett, Professor Emeritus from the University of Illinois will evaluate the set of heifers for conformation then utilize EPDs to select replacement heifers. Afterwards Mr. Glenn Gordon, Jr., will utilize the set of heifers to discuss marketing cattle from the perspective of a buyer and beef cattle markets.
   Following lunch, producers will have the opportunity to attend two of three presentations.  Mr. Chris Evans, Extension forester with the University of Illinois, will discuss invasive pasture plants and methods to control them. Dr. Lee Ann Lyons, University of Illinois Veterinary Medicine, will inform cattlemen about ticks, their behavior, and diseases carried by the ticks that can impact human health.  The third topic, black vultures in Illinois – behavior, deterrents – with a special emphasis on the process of securing a permit will be presented by Mr. Scott Beckman, State Director, USDA APHIS Wildlife Services.
   The registration fee for the conference is $15 per person for registrations received by August 9, or pay $20 per person at the door. The registration fee is waved for Illinois Beef Association members (please indicate when registering). The fee includes a light morning and afternoon refreshments, a noon meal, and conference materials. Lunch is not guaranteed for late and on-site registration.
