Soybean Researcher Of The Year




















   Dr. William Jeremy Ross, Extension Agronomist, Soybean/ Professor, University of Arkansas, System Division of Agriculture, Cooperative Extension Service, Little Rock, Arkansas, has been named the 2020 Soybean Researcher of the Year at the 23rd Annual National Conservation Systems Cotton & Rice Conference, Southern Corn & Soybean Conference, Southern Precision Ag Conference and the Delta States Irrigation Conference.
   Ross received B.S. in Microbiology and Zoology, M.S. in Plant Pathology and Ph.D in Soil Fertility form the University of Arkansas. 
   “Ross has worked for the last 23 years for the University of Arkansas, System Division of Agriculture, Cooperative Extension Service. He began his career in 1996 as Program Associate in Plant Pathology. In 2000, Ross became the first Corn and Grain Sorghum Research Verification Coordinator, and held that position until 2007. In 2007 Ross became the Extension Soybean Agronomist with statewide soybean and edamame production responsibilities. Ross provides applied agronomic research and educational programs for producers, consultants, industry personnel and County     Extension Agents in Arkansas. He is also involved in many state, regional and national organizations. Ross and his program have received numerous state, regional and national awards including the John W. White Team Research Award from the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture, once in 2015 and another in 2019, the Distinguished Rice Research and Education Team Award in 2012 from the Rice Technical Working Group, and the Distinguished Service Award in 2014 from the National Association of County Agricultural Agents in 2014 to name a few.”
   Significant Extension accomplishments specific to soybeans include: Soybean Variety Publications. Soybean Update, Metribuzin Tolerance Testing of Soybean Varieties and Cross Reference Guide for Common Soybean Varieties are publications created to aid soybean producers in soybean variety selections that will perform in their fields. The information listed in these publications is largely derived from the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture’s Soybean Performance Trials and screening programs conducted by University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture.
   Ross served as coordinator for the Arkansas Soybean College in August 2018. Additional Soybean Colleges will be held on an every-other-year rotation with the Rice Consultants School.
   In 2011, Ross co-developed the Arkansas Row Crops Blog (arkansasrowcrops.com) with Dr. Tom Barber. The University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture, Cooperative Extension Service needed a site where producers, crop consultants, industry personnel, county extension agents as well as agriculture industry leaders could find up to date information and management strategies for row crop production in Arkansas. This blog has won state, regional and national awards through different organizations.
   In 2014 the Arkansas Soybean Research Studies began. Ross obtained funding from the Arkansas Soybean Promotion Board to hire a technical editor to assist him with the editing of the Studies. Over 200 individual articles have been published in the last five years. The Arkansas Soybean Research Studies serves as a repository for year-end research projects funded through the Arkansas Soybean Promotion Board, and will serve as source for research that is used to develop production recommendations. ∆
